*Note: Good to read if you are a Friends fan who is unsure about Seinfeld and was not impressed by the first season (like me!)*
After watching the first season of Seinfeld I was going into the second season hoping for a change of heart (hoping it was like the first season of The Office kind of deal) and I am so glad to have been right! Seinfeld fans I apologize for any hate I have given the series because I am really starting to enjoy it after watching this 2nd season. The story has definitely picked up from the first season. While Jerry and George stayed relatively the same in character from the first season, the person who really transformed this season for me has to be Elaine.

I found Elaine funnier in Season 2 and her likeability increased, she became more relatable. Currently, Elaine is my favourite character so far, replacing my previous favourite from Season 1; Kramer (I’m sure he’ll make a comeback.) She stole the show for me, I found she made me laugh more than any other character. If she wasn’t the one making me laugh she was involved in a situation that made the scenario funnier. In episodes like The Chinese Restaurant and The Busboy, while Jerry and George are usually fumbling around trying to figure out what to do in the worst kind of ways, Elaine is there adding comedy, she is going over the top. The great thing about Elaine is that she is blunt in how she feels, but she manages to not come off whiny (like I find Jerry and George sometimes) she comes off as annoyed at the situation but in a funny way.
Her comedy plays on relating to how the viewer might feel given that situation. Elaine is like that intrusive thought that we all think about but don’t end up following through – except she does. We love to see Elaine interact with people especially REACTing to other people. She does not hold back and we don’t expect her to. That is the great thing this season introduces about Elaine.

Though Elaine has been stealing the show for me, Kramer is still classic Kramer and was showcased well in the second season. Although Kramer is considered a main character in the series, I noticed he is treated like a guest star sometimes, with the audience cheering when he first enters the scene. I understand this level of excitement towards Kramer, he can escalate a scenario even further than our-friend-the-intrusive-thought-Elaine. The episode The Statue, had me in stitches when Kramer came into the man’s apartment in disguise to retrieve the statue he thought he had stolen from Jerry. Kramer does things in a shaky, chaotic, unorganized and spontaneous way. His character in any scenario is pretty funny because he has unusual reactions and funny comebacks.
Season 2 was an improvement for characters like Elaine and Kramer, which enhanced the performances of Jerry and George. What I’m trying to say is – Jerry and George need Elaine and Kramer for the funniest scenes, but on the other hand Elaine and Kramer don’t necessarily need Jerry and George. While some characters are stronger and more likeable than others, the group altogether is at their comedic best.

What’s interesting now as well is the introduction to Elaine and Jerry’s romantic/sexual relationship – it seems we get to see what they were like as a couple. After all, the first season only showed us that they had a relationship in the past that led them both to just be friends. However, we all know that exes who hang out don’t really work, this dynamic opens the door to more funny situations to follow. While Elaine and Jerry seem cool with each other, the little digs and jabs here and there they give each other add another element to the group that keeps the characters from becoming too boring. Or from opening other relationships for Elaine to have with the other characters, if she is Jerry’s ex, George and Kramer will have no romantic interest in her and therefore we have established boundaries within the characters.
When we see Elaine with Kramer or George we are not to expect anything romantic to happen, nor want it to. They feel like friends and platonic friendships are important to sitcoms, it can show us real friendships that develop naturally between people who hang out all the time and the characters are free to be goofy without worrying to impress someone they are attracted to. The characters just get to have fun, it is a reality the show has created for us to enjoy so we do.
So far I am enjoying Seinfeld far more than I thought I would. I am glad I gave the show a real chance and to those fellow Friends fans who have been putting off watching Seinfeld, please know that I recommend it! Especially if you also enjoy The Office (U.S.) like I do.
Give it a chance and let me know what you’re going through too! What do you think of Seinfeld? How do you feel about what I said? Let me know how you feel in the sit-comments below! 🙂
