Underrated Friendships: Rachel and Chandler Edition

4–6 minutes

*Small Spoilers Disclaimer: This blog post contains information that reflects the 10 seasons of Friends, no major plotlines are revealed but there are mentions of the last season and last episodes in particular*

Rachel and Chandler are two of my favourite characters from Friends, in fact, when people ask me who my favourite character is I usually say Chandler. However, I usually add that I feel more relatable to Rachel as a character (I’ll touch more on this particular topic in a future Friends post.)

Usually, when people think of famous Friends duos they think of Rachel and Monica, Chandler and Joey and even Joey and Phoebe – respectively. This makes me want to uncover and show the other friendships between the 6 of them, starting off with Rachel and Chandler!

Here’s the thing that not everyone may realize, Rachel and Chandler have a long-standing history that is noticeable in their dynamic. While we witness Rachel joining the Friends group years after her estrangement from Monica, there is a chemistry between Rachel, Ross, Monica, and Chandler that reveals they are not strangers who became friends, but rather friends reuniting after a significant time apart. They both frequently reminisce about the past, bringing up memories of Rachel’s high school days with Monica and Ross, as well as Chandler’s college years with Ross. Having experienced formative years alongside the Geller siblings, they have evolved into lifelong friends within the series.

Even before Chandler and Monica become a couple, we observe Rachel and Chandler casually hanging out, such as getting their nails done together. It is evident that they are comfortable enough to engage in these small outings, and what is even more remarkable is that their relationship never veers into romantic territory, solidifying the authenticity of their friendship.

What continues to be refreshing about their friendship is they get into funny little antics together like in The One With All The Cheesecakes. We get to see a whole episode of Rachel and Chandler comedy together and I was so here for it! Something as trivial as an accidental cheesecake coming to the apartment brought these two friends together to not only show their love of good cheesecake but their willingness to keep it a secret from everyone else and have some hidden indulgence they share together. It’s not serious, it’s not dramatic, it is just a funny scenario that two friends find themselves in on a regular day. This kind of situational comedy is light-hearted, easy to digest and fun for those looking to relax and be comforted by everyday comedic life.

I also love the episodes where Rachel and Chandler set each other up on dates. We have Chandler being set up with Rachel’s boss Joanna and Rachel being set up with possible guys from Chandler’s work. What’s most important is that they are there for each other at the end of those set-ups to see how each other is, they give each other advice and make each other laugh. They are literally there to see each relationship they are in and how it turns out, they stick by each other through good and bad times – Rachel and Chandler are real friends.

They have maintained a good friendship over time, even after their small but significant little makeout session back when Rachel and Monica were visiting Ross at a college party. Not to mention when he peeped at Rachel in the shower by accident in The One With The Boobies, Rachel and Chandler have had instances where they could have been attracted to each other but chose to bypass these opportunities and maintain the good friend kind of vibe they already established.

When Chandler has to say goodbye to Rachel at the end of Season 10, you can see they really care about each other. Rachel who gives off main character vibes, also symbolizes a part of our lives where we used to be lost and confused in our 20s, she leaves Chandler more complete than they were in Season 1. Rachel is in a way saying goodbye to Chandler and the situation their friendship developed in – now they are both moving on being parents, living someplace new, and starting new journies in life. It’s transformative to see them come together at the end, with lessons and laughs shared together, I really can appreciate the comical little storylines Chandler and Rachel supported each other with because they are two funny, strong characters.

Friends really does live up to its name, the 6 of them are all friends and have their own friendships within the group that stand out here and there. It’s nice to acknowledge them now and then, next time you watch Friends try to see what you think of the friendship dynamic between Rachel and Chandler.

What do you all think? Do you like Rachel and Chandler’s friendship? Did you want to see more? What other unlikely duos would you like to hear about in the Friends universe? Let me know what you have to say in the sit-comments below 🙂
