Seinfeld: First Impressions of the Birth of Nothing

5–7 minutes

Okay, so clearly I am a big Friends fan and therefore not a big Seinfeld fan. However, I have decided to give Seinfeld a chance since it is one of the biggest and most successful sitcoms out there. I do not want to give up on something that could potentially be a great and enjoyable experience, I do appreciate most types of humour and find myself quite diverse so I think I will have a shot at liking Seinfeld maybe after all these years.

This will be a true analysis since I have not watched the series before. I have started the first 2 episodes multiple times in hopes I will watch it from start to finish. I always found myself getting bored, unfortunately and did not wish to go further at first. Now, I will dedicate this analysis to a post and push forward giving my honest opinion about this show.

I am excited to get into Seinfeld so let’s start with the first season. It aired for the first time in 1989 prompting me to place it under the 1980s, though it does not really pick up into a proper season until season 2 which would place it as a mostly 1990s sitcom. That is why I will put this under both categories. Anyways, without further ado, let’s talk about what I thought about the first season of Seinfeld (which I soon found out was only 5 episodes long – a different kind of first start but okay.)

My first impression is a classic sitcom, love the casual spot to meet up with to talk with your friends and the look of an old-time diner. I love the way the 80s and 90s feel, that lack of technology is so appealing when you just want to concentrate on discussing life’s problems with your friends.

Something I already do not like – is Jerry Seinfeld’s stand-up comedy. I do not find it funny, in fact, I find it kind of cringy. I feel like I’m looking to laugh but simply am falling short of a snort or small chuckle. I don’t mean to compare it to Friends as much but I feel like I get more belly laughs from Friends even comparing their first episodes. But I can look past this and focus on the storyline, just something I already don’t like and can tell it will be around for many episodes to come.

What I did like is that they can get into relatable situations, however, I don’t find myself relating to them – the characters. They don’t give off a likeable vibe so far, but hey I watch and love The Office (U.S.) so I’m not opposed to liking a sarcastic type of humour. Still, I’m finding it hard to like and therefore care about the characters. Kramer has made me laugh though, can’t deny he is the funniest character so far.

I like the format of the show, the casual scenes in between unfortunate misadventures between the group. They don’t seem to have each other’s backs as much as a group of friends does, you can see that Jerry is supposed to go as Elaine’s date to help make her look good and he ends up flirting with another woman while there. It’s kind of funny, sure, what are the odds you meet someone under those circumstances? But Jerry is clearly not a good friend to Elaine or else he should have been there praising and being more attentive to her even if they aren’t together romantically.

I can already tell, these are terrible people, and because they do the terrible things they do we are supposed to find their misfortunes funny. I get that type of concept from a show like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. In which case, I hope I see more of why I like It’s Always Sunny in Seinfeld.

Jerry: “You would still wanna move in here?”

Elaine: “Yes! You don’t understand. I’m living with Ethel Merman without the talent.”

Jerry: “Is that uh, other apartment still available?”

*George shows him the keys*

David, Larry, et al. “The Robbery.” Seinfeld, season 1, episode 3, NBC, 7 June 1990.

I like how Elaine and George are trying to convince Jerry to move so badly but are ultimately trying to benefit their lives in the process. In ‘The Robbery,’ even though they are a group it’s a funny situation to be in and you get to see them play out how a scenario would go if people were trying to get each other’s apartments. I could also like the fact Jerry was robbed because Kramer came in and left the door open to show how careless/carefree he is and how often he really is in his apartment when he’s away. It sucks for Jerry, but at this time Kramer is the funniest so it is easier to forgive him and just laugh.

I also do like the concept of them all being terrible people, I could enjoy watching them go through the consequences of being unfavourable people.

There was even the episode where Jerry met up with an old friend who he cannot seem to stand anymore after seeing how he treated the server at the restaurant they met up at. This guy was supposed to be extra rude or had to be if he was to look worst than the main characters. But, I do get it too, this is showing a relatable scenario where you’re with someone and they start acting rude in public or you realize you actually don’t like hanging out with them and now you feel awkward and stuck. I found it cringe-funny, it wasn’t my favourite but I did try to laugh at it and I’m sure as I warm up to the characters I will find their antics funnier.

This may be an Office (U.S.) type situation, where the first season is unlike the rest of them. That the 1st season has a totally different vibe and it picks up pace in the following ones to come. I wonder if Seinfeld fans are screaming at me right now as they try to understand how someone doesn’t love their beloved show. The only thing I can do is keep watching and see how season 2 turns out. After all, the second season starts in the 1990s my personal favourite sitcom TV era.

Am I wrong or am I right? Do you agree about the 1st season? What were your thoughts when you watched it? Let me know what you think overall in the sit-comments below! 🙂
